SMS Environmental is pleased to announce that its flagship Water Treatment Technologist (WTT) programme has officially achieved City & Guilds Assured status, marking a significant milestone in the continued development of technical excellence across the business.
The WTT programme is a rigorous, advanced training pathway designed to develop high-level expertise across the full spectrum of water treatment disciplines. Typically taking up to two years to complete, the course covers:
-
General water chemistry
-
Pre-treatment and external treatment plant
-
Boiler water treatment, including steam boiler systems
-
Closed system treatment
-
Evaporative cooling systems
-
Wastewater treatment
-
Water treatment calculations
The programme is structured to reflect real-world operational demands. Much of the learning is self-directed, supported by five intensive week-long taught modules, each incorporating practical elements or group project work. Every module concludes with a formal examination that must be passed.
Candidates who successfully progress through the modules must then complete a 200-question final examination, sat in person under strict exam conditions. The standard is intentionally high—this is a challenging programme designed to ensure that only the most capable and committed professionals achieve full qualification.
Entry to the WTT programme is equally demanding. Delegates must have a minimum of five years’ experience within a water-related industry and at least two years’ service with SMS Environmental, ensuring that participants bring both technical grounding and organisational understanding to the course.
Successful candidates will be awarded the City & Guilds Assured credential and formally recognised as subject matter experts within SMS Environmental. Graduates will also be identifiable through distinct professional uniforms, reflecting their achievement and expertise.
The first cohort of WTT delegates is expected to complete the programme this summer, representing a major milestone for both the individuals involved and the organisation as a whole.
In addition to internal recognition, the WTT programme provides a strong foundation for further professional development, including progression towards internationally recognised qualifications such as the Certified Water Technologist (CWT) designation.
SMS Environmental extends its sincere thanks to James Ray for his dedication and hard work in successfully guiding the programme through the City & Guilds assurance process.
